About Voices of Texas

Texas is big enough that a story true in Houston can be wrong in Lubbock. Voices of Texas tries to say which one it is. We write about the systems people here depend on, like roads, water, the grid and schools, and about the things that make a place feel like home, like a plate of brisket or a trip to the fair in October.

What we cover

Stories run in ten sections. Transportation andPublic Safety follow the highways and what happens on them.Infrastructure and Environmentcover water, bridges, power and drought. Economy,Communities and Texas track growth and how it lands in different regions. Education covers schools and colleges. Outdoors and Culture cover parks, fishing, food and the traditions people plan their year around.

Who writes it

A small group of writers keeps a beat each. Every story carries a byline, and every writer page lists that person's work.

How we source

Numbers come from the agency that collects them, and each story lists those sources at the bottom. When a figure can't be confirmed, we describe what is known instead of guessing. Ourstandards page explains corrections and the rest.
