Where the numbers come from

We take figures from whoever actually collects them. Crash counts come from TxDOT, population from the Census Bureau and the Texas Demographic Center, water from the Texas Water Development Board, park and license rules from Texas Parks and Wildlife. Each story lists its sources at the bottom so a reader can check our work. If we can't pin a number to a source, we leave it out or say plainly what remains unknown.

Fixing mistakes

When we get something wrong, we fix the page and say what changed. Readers who spot an error can write to the editor through the contact page, and we will check it against the source.

Bylines

Every story carries the name of the writer who reported it. Writer pages on theOur Writers page list each person's beat and published work.

Politics

We don't endorse candidates or parties. When a policy question is contested, we report the positions and the record behind them and leave the verdict to readers.
